TERRATERRA Environmental Research Institute opened its doors this past August and is Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ archetype for the schools of tomorrow. The high school boasts a capacity for more than 1,800 students.

TERRA promotes a green culture among its student body, teaching an ecologically-conscience curricula through three academies: Environmental Research and Field Studies, Biomedical Research and Engineering Technology and Robotics. The school’s own structure contains environmentally friendly effects. The main entrance and lobby showcase real-time information regarding TERRA’s energy spending. Motion sensors for lighting are located around the institute. A green house where students grow their very own crops is planned to be the eventual source for the creation of a student-run farmer’s market, offering organic items for neighboring homes and businesses throughout the community.

TERRA Environmental Research Institute is located at 11005 S.W. 84th Street, Miami, Florida and is a Miami-Dade County Public School.

More Information:

“Environmental Research and Field Studies will focus but not be limited to seeking solutions to contemporary environmental problems in the community. Students will perform field studies, observations and laboratory investigations in natural preserved areas in natural habitats including but not limited to the school site. Students will study current environmental political issues through research, analysis and debate.” (Source: TERRA web site)

October’s arrival summons the fun and imaginative spirit of one of my favorite days: Halloween. For kids of all ages, this means a night of ghosts, goblins and gooey, sugar-packed delights.

Until now.

TrickOrTreatMe.com

This year, Tetra Pak, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Hershey’s and Organic Valley are working together, using the web and social media, to spread their message of a healthier and more environmentally-sound treat for kids. Instead of handing out candy (and adding to what is sure to be a night of stomach pains for most of these kids), why not offer trick-or-treaters delicious milk to wash down all that junk with. (Plus, Tetra Pak cartons are recyclable and renewable.) You may get a few raised eyebrows, but their teeth and tummies will thank you later. (Besides, it’s not like you’ll be handing out pennies — Don’t laugh; I’ve seen it!)

Twick Or Tweet MeThey’ve implemented a festive social media campaign where Facebook and Twitter users can play a game of ‘trick’ or ‘treat’ with friends and family. Web site visitors can get their friends hyped for Halloween fun by uploading personal photos onto to adorabley dreadful, dancing monster bodies. (You must enter an email address to send.)

All in all, the best part of this campaign is that for every trick or treat sent, Tetra Pak will donate $.10 to the World Wildlife Fund. Pretty simple act, which can have a great impact. It’s stuff like this that we should feel guilty about not doing; I mean, it takes only a few seconds and requires beyond minimal effort. So folks, I implore you to give a little back and get into the Halloween spirit! It’s for a great cause.

Happy Halloween!

MonaEve Design Farm fan pageJust a few years ago the term, social media was non-existent. Nowadays, it’s infiltrated all our lives and is without a doubt here to stay. Whether this is a good or bad thing, really depends on who you ask, but no matter your stance the positive use of social media sites like a Facebook fan page are undeniable. Here are four reasons why:

Search Results:
This is great for Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Having an online presence other than an actual website or blog is an easy way to link back to your main site or blog; tying these together helps to attract more visitors. One simple way is to use a Facebook widget. (You can view MonaEve Design Farm’s widget located in the far right sidebar under Happening on Facebook.) When a user types in a keyword search in their search engine for “insert your site/blog name here” a Facebook fan page is sure to come up high in a list of search results, creating more visibility for your company. (Note: Be sure to obtain your Facebook username for optimal search results.)

Build Your Brand:
Nowadays, being accessible via the internet is a must for your credibility. Many large corporations like Target are making this commonplace and the expected norm. If you’re company is not online, consider yourself a caveman.

Stay Fresh:
Having a Facebook page makes it easy to update fans with all the information occurring on the ‘inside’. Is there a particular person’s achievements you would like to highlight? Or an event you would like to promote? A video you would like others to see? These can be featured here, making it easy for fans to view, comment and engage with you and your company.

Recession, Anyone?
Really the simplest reason to have one is because it is free and in times like these, everyone can use a freebie.

Most importantly: Keep in mind, the best way to get fans and help integrate a fan page is by word of mouth. Make it a real goal. Commit to keeping your fan page content fresh, giving your fans something to look forward to.

Some may notice a new look around these parts and yes, I’ve switched themes. My previous theme Fancy, from AZ Money was, and still is, a lovely, bright, colorful and fun theme, but no longer fits the image I’d like my blog to portray. The differences are evident, which is pretty funny, considering this theme is named Evidens (by Design Disease); this new look is pristine and modern, much like my web site and more accurately displays my blog’s content – very important. Nonetheless, I believe that this space is ever-evolving, so there may be more theme changes to come, but for now Evidens is here to stay and I’d love your feedback: What are your thoughts on this new look?
